Kyoichi Tsuzuki's Happy Victims started its life as a column in the fashion magazine Ryuko Tsushin documenting the lives (and shopping habits) of Japan's most dedicated fashion "victims", running from 1999 to 2006. In stark contrast to the glamour and fantasy suggested by fashion photography and advertising, Tsuzuki's subjects sit in cramped quarters, surrounded- almost overwhelmed- by their collections. Despite their dedication, the brands they follow seem to shun them in pursuit of more aspirational classes of customer. Nevertheless, as Tsuzuki remarks, they are "magic" to his eyes, and "radiate positive vibes that transcend all reason".
With a newly reworked cover and belly band, Happy Victims has been reissued to meet a wholly transformed fashion industry. In the age of endless collecting and overconsumption, the meticulous curation of Tsuzuki's Victims' collections feels both markedly contemporary in approach, yet deeply nostalgic and personal.
