In 1970, Scanlan’s Monthly published “Guerrilla War in the U.S.A.,” a sprawling special issue devoted to political violence, sabotage, and the growing belief that the United States had entered a period of domestic insurgency. At its center was a map charting bombings, riots, police clashes, student uprisings, and militant activity across the country.

The issue was so controversial that printers across the United States refused to print it.
