Ecce Cal is a debut anthology of art-writing compiled over the course of two summers. Leaning on the latin ‘ecce’ meaning ‘behold’, and summoning the words of Pontius Pilate at presentation of Jesus: ‘ecce homo’ ‘behold the man’ it attempts to make vulnerable and expose a young life lived.
Ecce Cal sits in a hybrid space as an autobiographical, self-revelatory work whilst being a direct personal response to art, music and film significant to the author. Ecce Cal is a life-book, a sex-book, a break-up-then-cruising book, a George Michael, Derek Jarman and Pet Shop Boys book. It is this drive to blend the intimately lived with the culturally iconic in which Ecce is fully achieved.
